Award for academic

A Barry-born academic is celebrating after being given a prestigious award for his achievements in mechanics.

Jeremy Dunning-Davies, 66, has received the gold medal for Hadronic Mechanics from the Santilli-Galilei Association, and will collect the prestigious award at Imperial College, London, in July.

He said: "Its a great honour for me to receive an award from this wonderful organisation."

Dr Dunning-Davies spent his childhood in Barry, and attended Barry Boys' Grammar School, where he was made Head Boy in 1958.

His father, Ernie Davies, was headmaster of Barry Island School for 26 years, as well as being a leading light in Welsh schoolboy soccer.

After finishing school, Dr Dunning-Davies attended The University of Liverpool where he studied mathematics, before returning to South Wales to study for a Ph D in Cardiff on the application of mathematical physics.

Since completing his education, he has been lecturing at Hull University, joining as a mathematics lecturer before switching to physics. He will be retiring from the post in July 2008.

He said: "I have enjoyed a long career at Hull, but although I am retiring from the university, I will still be very active."
