Visit is a real success
The visit of the Archbishop of Wales, the Very Reverend Dr
Barrie Morgan, to the small listed redundant church of St
Lawrence at Lavernock Point, between Penarth and Sully,
in December has been hailed as an enormous success by
the Friends of St Lawrence.
This was a long anticipated visit, the Archbishop coming
to give the address at the Service of Lessons and Carols.
All agreed the candlelit church was a perfect setting and
particularly clear was the real joy everyone felt in having the
Archbishop with them at this very special time in the year and
so thrilled that he could be making the Christmas address.
The spokesperson for the steering group said: "We know
we have a demanding task ahead of us, in restoring and
adapting this lovely old country church into a place which can
be fully utilised and enjoyed by many more members of the
community, in a variety of ways, while still being able to
continue its heritage by occasional gatherings for worship -
but we all believe it is a job worth doing."
The service was led by Rev Margaret Stark, retired former
vicar and Hon Chaplain to the Friends' Group.
The organist was Bert Lane. Angela Maguin from
Montpelier, France, talented soloist and native of Penarth,
enchanted the congregation with Christmas items of
Gregorian Chanting from the eighth century.
After the service Colin Kitsall from the Holiday Park at
Lavernock Point invited everyone back to the park for minced
pies and mulled wine.
