Projects set to boost town

A £1m programme of environmental and community projects is set to provide a further boost to the major renewal area initiative transforming central Penarth.

Initiated by the Vale Council in 2000, and jointly funded by the authority and the Welsh Assembly Government, the town's 10- year multi-million pound central renewal area project covers around 544 properties, mainly bounded by Arcot Street, Plassey Street, Albert Road and Paget Road.

Sixteen phases of grantfunded group repair schemes are now either complete or set to get underway and, to date, some 275 homes have benefited - a participation rate of 81 per cent.

There are a further 11 phases of group repair - renovating the exteriors of properties (for example, roofs, walls, doors, windows and chimneys) - programmed for completion.

In addition to improving the housing stock, the project also involves environmental and community schemes which have already included the provision of new play equipment at Belle Vue Park and improvements to the Lord Street Triangle green space and waste ground at Queens Road.

Cabinet member for legal and public protection Cllr Val Hartrey said: "I am delighted with the progress we have made with this project. It is providing a tremendous boost for this part of Penarth and generating a new confidence among residents."
